Frequently asked questions

Wire Ropes General:

Does the specified length refer purely to the steel cable or is the complete length measured?

The specified length refers to the actual usable length incl. swaged loops, thimbles or terminals (and ¾ opened tensioners, if any). Under the technical details on each product detail page you will find a representation for the length specification of the wire rope.

What does the length range mean?

In the case of wire ropes with individual length production, the appropriate length range must first be selected and then the exact desired length must be entered in the field provided. The length range is necessary to determine the price. For the underlying dimensions, please refer to the technical details on each product detail page.

May stainless steel accessories be combined with galvanized wire ropes or galvanized accessories with stainless steel ropes? May stainless steel ropes, for example, be crimped with aluminum crimping clamps?

In principle, we advise against the use of different metals, due to different electrochemical properties. In the worst case, contact corrosion can cause a substance to dissolve.

What is the elongation of wire ropes?

The elongation at break of steel wire ropes is only approx. 1.5 - 1.8% elongation. The modulus of elasticity for wire & steel ropes cannot be determined without error. The modulus of elasticity differs greatly for wire ropes because the internal friction of the individual wires is very different.

What is the minimum bending radius of wire & steel ropes?

For the smallest permissible bending radius of a steel wire rope, please multiply the diameter of the steel wire rope by 20. For example, a 3mm wire rope has a bending radius of at least 60mm.

What is the difference between flexible and stiff wire ropes?

Wire ropes with the 1x19 construction are considered 'stiff' and less flexible due to the low number of individual wires. The 7x7 and 7x19 constructions, on the other hand, offer high flexibility due to the high number of individual wires. Due to a higher material density, stiff wire ropes generally have a higher breaking load than flexible wire ropes of the same rope thickness. Stiff wire ropes can be used for straight guy wires without deflections (for example, for shrouds on a sailboat). For a climbing aid, flexible wire rope is more suitable, as the rope provides more surface area for the plants.

The special length is specified as 0.30m - 1.00m, what length is now supplied? I need 0.70m.

Please first select the length range in which your desired length is located (0.30m - 1.00m). Then enter your exact desired length (0.70m) in the desired size field.

Does the specified payload apply only to the wire rope or also include the swaged terminals, thimbles or loops?

The minimum breaking load or working load refers to the complete rope connection, since in all test trials it was always the wire rope that broke. Alternatively, a lower value is given (for example, for wire ropes with turnbuckle DIN 1480 hook / eye).

What is the diameter of the wire rope's ferrule?

The diameter of the crimping clamp has the size of twice the rope diameter in each case.

Is it possible in principle to order total lengths that are less than 0.30m?

Yes, depending on the rope thickness, rope length less than 0.30m can also be made. You are welcome to place the order for this, if it does not fit, we would contact you again.

Do open wire ends of wire ropes need to be fixed so that they do not drip open?

Yes, the wire rope end should be protected from splicing with the help of an end sleeve (https://www.steelropes24.com/wire-rope-end-sleeves-black).

What does annealing separation mean?

In the process of annealing, the individual wires are desoldered from the open end of a steel cable to prevent them from splicing.

Are wire ropes magnetic?

Yes, magnets adhere to the wire rope due to the iron content in the rope.

How can the minimum breaking force of Newton/mm² of the wire ropes be converted into maximum weight force that the wire rope can safely withstand?

To calculate the minimum breaking force, divide the value of the minimum breaking force from the table by the earth's gravitational force (9.81). Example 3mm (6x19) wire rope galvanized: 5,420 N : 9.81 = 552.50kg. Please note that this is the actual breaking force. Please add at least a 3-5 times safety factor for your application. Example 3mm 6x19: 552.50kg : 5 = 100kg.

Wire Ropes Coated:

What does the specification inside the brackets mean for sheathed wire ropes? So e.g. 8mm (6 on 8)?

The numbers in brackets describe the thickness of the wire rope without and with sheathing. In this example, the wire rope without sheathing is accordingly 6mm thick and including plastic sheathing then 8mm.

Can a sheathed wire rope be cut with bolt cutters?

With a good quality bolt cutter and about 2 - 5 minutes of time, 3mm (2 on 3) and 4mm (3 on 4) wire rope can be cut. For a 6mm (4 on 6) wire rope, it takes about 5 - 10 minutes and for an 8mm (6 on 8) wire rope, 10 - 12 minutes. Only from a thickness of 10mm (8 to 10) cutting through is no longer possible. Cutting with a bolt cutter is basically very difficult, since the wires of the wire rope splice apart and the bolt cutter must always be applied at exactly the same point.

I need a wire rope as an anti-theft device for garden/patio furniture. What strength do you recommend me?

For anti-theft protection of patio and garden furniture in a restaurant or private area, we recommend a rope thickness of 6mm (4 on 6) or 8mm (6 on 8).

Is the sheathing weather & sunlight resistant and therefore suitable for outdoor use?

The sheathing of the wire ropes is very UV-resistant. In an outdoor test over a period of more than 3 years, no change in the sheathing could be detected.

May plastic-sheathed wire ropes with crimp clamps and thimbles be used for lifting loads?

No, as a general rule, steel wire ropes with sheathing must not be used for lifting loads.

Can the sheathing be removed at the ends? Over a length of, say, 2 - 3cm? Like stripping the insulation from a cable.

Yes, this is easily done with a knife.

When using crimp terminals or terminals, should the sheath of the wire rope be stripped? And as a result, would you buy 4mm accessories for the 6mm (4 on 6) cable?

Yes, for optimum durability, the sheathed steel cable should be stripped before crimping. Accordingly, please order matching accessories for the bare steel cable. For a 6mm (4 on 6) so 4mm accessories, correct.

Wire ropes by the meter:

Can more than 200 meters (e.g. 600 meters) be ordered in one piece?

This is no problem. Please send us a request by e-mail to info@drahtseile24.de with the required quantity and we will make you an individual offer at short notice.

Wire ropes with loops:

What is the diameter of the eyelets / loops of the wire rope?

The loops of the wire ropes are uniformly pressed according to DIN specifications and have the size of the rope diameter factor 15, thus resulting in the following loop heights and widths: 1mm rope thickness: 15mm loop height inside, 7mm loop width inside | 1.5mm rope thickness: 23mm loop height inside, 15mm loop width inside | 2mm rope thickness: 30mm loop height inside, 15mm loop width inside | 3mm rope thickness: 45mm loop height inside, 22m loop width inside | 4mm rope thickness: 60mm loop height inside, 29mm loop width inside | 5mm rope thickness: 75m loop height inside, 34mm loop width inside | 6mm rope thickness: 90mm loop height inside, 38mm loop width inside | 8mm rope thickness: 120mm loop height inside, 56mm loop width inside | 10mm rope thickness: 150mm loop height inside, 70mm loop width inside | 12mm rope thickness: 180mm loop height inside, 84mm loop width inside | 14mm rope thickness: 210mm loop height inside, 97mm loop width inside | 16mm rope thickness: 240mm loop height inside, 115mm loop width inside.

To what minimum diameter can the loops of the wire ropes be compressed?

The minimum loop width per rope diameter is listed below: 1mm rope thickness: 3mm minimum loop width | 1.5mm rope thickness: 7mm minimum loop width | 2mm rope thickness: 8mm minimum loop width | 3mm rope thickness: 15mm minimum loop width | 4mm rope thickness: 19mm minimum loop width | 5mm rope thickness: 26mm minimum loop width | 6mm rope thickness: 33mm minimum loop width | 8mm rope thickness: 43mm minimum loop width | 10mm rope thickness: 58mm minimum loop width | 12mm rope thickness: 85mm minimum loop width | 14mm rope thickness: 106mm minimum loop width | 16mm rope thickness: 128mm minimum loop width.

Is it possible to pass one loop through the other loop?

Yes, the loop size allows one loop to pass through the other loop.

Can the wire ropes be equipped with larger loops than the standard size?

A custom design with larger loops is basically no problem and can be easily requested by e-mail (info@drahtseile24.de). Alternatively, you can specify your desired diameter or height of the loops in the comments field at the end of your order. We will then manufacture the wire rope to fit you.

Wire ropes with terminals:

What is the recommended thickness for a railing and should it be flexible or rigid?

For a railing we recommend a wire rope thickness of 4mm - 5mm. If the rope is not to be deflected but only straightened, we recommend using a stiff stainless steel rope.

Do I need one left-hand thread terminal and one right-hand thread terminal to tension a steel cable with thread terminals between two posts? Or is it also possible with two right-hand thread terminals?

If the threaded terminals are inserted through the posts and tightened with the help of the lock nut, two right-handed threads can be used. If the terminals are not inserted through the posts, left-handed and right-handed terminals must be used.

Wire ropes for fitness equipment:

Do you also have threaded bolts for fitness equipment in dimensions other than M10, M12 or M14?

Unfortunately, we do not have threaded bolts for fitness equipment with imperial dimensions or other sizes in our range. However, you are welcome to send us your threaded bolt for crimping. Simply place an order in our online store with the appropriate wire rope and a corresponding comment. Then you can send us your threaded bolt with a small letter with your address, e-mail address and the request for the conversion.

Wire ropes for garage doors:

I have a garage door where the thimble has a larger diameter than their standard thimble that is swaged. Can a larger thimble be swaged?

We can also crimp all wire ropes with a larger thimble. Just note this wish in the note to your order and we will make the wire rope suitable for you.

Accessories General:

Are accessories two pieces (If 2x pcs are in the picture)? Even if I put only one piece in the cart, they are in pairs?

No, it is the actual number of pieces. When you order 1x piece, you will also get 1x piece.

What size of accessories, e.g. clamps, do I need if I have, for example, a 2mm wire rope? Do I then need clamps in 2mm or 4mm size when I make a loop and want to fix it?

The specified thickness of the clamps or accessories always refers to the direct wire rope thickness. So if rope clamps are needed for a 2mm wire rope, then you need clamps in a size of 2mm.

Press clamps:

What are the options for pressing clamps?

Aluminum and copper crimping clamps can be optimally crimped with our hydraulic crimping pliers (https://www.steelropes24.com/hydraulic-crimping-tool-for-ferrules-and-wire-rope-terminals) from a thickness of 3mm up to a thickness of 10mm (stainless steel crimping clamps up to 6mm). To crimp 1.5mm - 4mm aluminum and copper crimping clamps, our 2-in-1 crimping pliers & wire rope cutter (https://www.steelropes24.com/2-in-1-wire-rope-ferrule-crimping-tool-and-cutter) can be used.

Are the same press jaws to be used for round press clamps as for oval press clamps?

Yes, round and oval press clamps can be pressed with the same press jaws for press clamps.

What size of crimping clamps do I use for sheathed wire ropes?

The size of the clamp must be adjusted to the thickness of the wire rope including the plastic coating. For example, with a 4mm (3 on 4) wire rope, a 4mm clamp must be selected.

I need a press clamp for 0.5mm stainless steel cable. Are these also available?

Press clamps in 0.5mm thickness are not available, but you can press the stainless steel cable with a stainless steel press clamp size 1mm.

Wire rope cutters & crimping pliers:

I would like to press clamps of different thicknesses. Do I need press jaws for the hydraulic press for each rope thickness or are they for specific areas?

A different set of pressing jaws must be used for each rope thickness. The individual pressing jaws can be purchased at https://www.steelropes24.com/pressing-dies-for-hydraulic-crimping-tool.

If I ordered terminals for 3mm wire ropes, then I also order the hydraulic crimping pliers in the 3mm terminals version, correct?

Exactly right. The selection of the size always refers to the wire rope thickness to be crimped. Please note that stainless steel lens head terminals and stainless steel ball terminals, due to their small diameter, must be crimped with a smaller crimping jaw size. A 4mm lens head terminal must therefore be crimped with the crimping jaw size for 3mm terminals.

Pulleys:

For which wire rope thickness is a pulley suitable? Is there a formula for the maximum wire rope thickness?

For temporary use of wire ropes, we recommend using the 4t pulley up to a rope thickness of 6mm, the 10t pulley up to a rope thickness of 10mm and the 16.3t pulley up to a rope thickness of 16mm. For permanent use of wire ropes, the size of the pulley diameter should be at least 20 times the rope diameter.

Locks:

Are the locks always keyed alike when ordered?

When ordering several locks, the locks are always delivered keyed alike.

Can keyed alike locks be reordered?

Yes, this is not a problem. Please indicate your request and order number in the comment field at the end of the order.

Is there a possibility to get more than 2x keys per padlock?

Unfortunately, only 2x keys are included per lock.
